Congrats! You have been offered a spot in a program, likely out of hundreds or thousands of applications. However, you probably did not apply to only one program, so you have some things to consider now:
Was this your top choice program? If yes, then you're all set! Send a nice correspondence back accepting the offer. If not, you shouldn't immediately pass up the opportunity - you applied to this program for some reason. Consider the deadline you have to reply to the program, and when the other programs will let you know if you have a spot or not.
Are you still able to attend? It is possible when you decided to apply for a program, there were some unknowns that you left to figure out later. Now that you have been accepted to that program, make sure that those unknowns have answers - if you needed to have so much money by then, needed to make housing arrangements, etc - do not accept until you can say for sure that you can fulfill the obligations of the program. Inevitably, issues may arise out of your control that will stop you from attending, but if there are issues known upon an offer, resolve them first.
Be respectful of each program's time. If you have accepted a spot in a program, let the other programs you applied to know that you are grateful for their time and consideration, but that you are no longer available. It is tempting to just wait and see if they would have wanted you, but it is not fair to those reviewing your application or other applicants who could have the spot you would no longer take. Also, if you are early in your degree, you may reapply to those programs during a later summer, and the way you handle yourself during this application cycle will matter in the future.
Welcome to my blog! I received the opportunity to be a research fellow full-time for ten weeks during Summer 2016 (and to continue through the Fall), and have tried my best to relay my experiences and what I have learned here. I hope I can provide some insight on the realities in conducting scientific research, as well as introduce you to something new you may have never heard of or thought of before. Enjoy, and feel free to contact me with the form on the right sidebar below.
