Don't Forget the Fun!

When you are in a summer undergraduate research program, you are there to immerse yourself in whatever topics and work your program plans to cover.  However, that doesn't mean you can't have some fun while doing it. Here are a few suggestions as to how you can make sure your summer experience is enjoyable all around.

Get to Know Your Co-Workers and Peers

You will likely be spending a lot of time with your co-workers, so why not utilize that time to get to know them as you learn new techniques? You might be able to talk to them about their experiences as they got to where they are, which can definitely help you figure out your future school and career plans. Depending on your program, you may have to go out of your way to meet and spend time with your peers, but try your best to. All of them are there because they have similar interests to you, and maybe you'll even end up working together or collaborating in the future! Most of all, you may cultivate life long connections and friendships with those you meet during your program.

Explore the Surrounding Area

Many programs will be held in an area different from your hometown or where you go to school. Have some adventures wherever you are placed, and explore the places around you. You never know what you might find - maybe you'll happen upon your new favorite restaurant, or a museum that focuses on something you love.

Continue Your Other Passions

Often times, summer is a time to indulge in all of the things that you do not have as much as time as you would like to do when you are in classes. While you are in a summer program, you will of course still be busy, and likely studying to some degree as well. However, you probably will have more free time than you do during the school year, so take advantage of it! Finally start that book you've been waiting to, start running again, or practice your favorite instrument.
